What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students identify traditions, holidays, and activities connected to cultural groups in their classroom and local area. They compare these with events that bring the wider community together.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can describe a cultural tradition without assuming everyone in that culture practices it. They can explain how a local event represents distinct cultures, a shared community identity, or both.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think everyone from one culture follows the same traditions. They may believe cultural diversity exists only in cities. They may also think a shared identity means everyone celebrates the same way.
How to Assess It: Use an exit ticket: “Name one cultural tradition and one local community event. Explain what each tells us about the people in a community.”

Ways to Teach It

Create a class culture quilt with paper squares showing a family tradition, food, song, game, or celebration each student chooses to share.
Discuss or write: “How can people celebrate different traditions and still feel that they belong to the same community?”
Sort teacher-made picture cards into cultural traditions, holidays, and shared community events, then explain where cards could fit more than one group.
Examine local event calendars or flyers and identify which cultural groups are represented and how each event brings neighbors together.
