The Standard

Activities available for people living in urban, suburban, and rural communities are different. The type of community a person grows up in will affect a person’s development and identity.

Key Idea 2.1

A community is a population of various individuals in a common location. It can be characterized as urban, suburban, or rural. Population density and use of the land are some characteristics that define and distinguish types of communities.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students identify activities people may do in urban, suburban, and rural communities. They explain how nearby places, land, and transportation can shape routines, interests, and skills.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a photo or map, students name likely activities and point to evidence that supports their ideas. They compare communities without claiming that all residents have the same experiences.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think outdoor activities happen only in rural areas or that cities have no parks. They may also treat an activity as exclusive to one community instead of considering access and frequency.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “Choose one community type. Name an activity someone might do there, identify a place that supports it, and explain how it could shape an interest or skill.”

Ways to Teach It

Give groups community photo cards to sort, then have them match each setting with activities supported by visible land, buildings, or transportation.
Ask students to write: “How might growing up near a farm, park, library, or subway shape what you enjoy doing?”
Play Community Match by pairing activity cards with setting cards, earning a point only when the player explains the match.
Use a local map to find places for recreation, learning, shopping, and work, then compare them with another community’s map.
