Key Idea 2.1

A community is a population of various individuals in a common location. It can be characterized as urban, suburban, or rural. Population density and use of the land are some characteristics that define and distinguish types of communities.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students sort communities as rural, suburban, or urban using clues such as open space, housing, and how closely people live. They identify their own community type and support their choice with visible evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly label community photographs and explain which details support each label. They use population density to describe whether many or few people live within an area.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think rural means poor, old-fashioned, or entirely made up of farms. They may also confuse population density with total population or assume every community fits one type perfectly.
How to Assess It: Show three community photographs and ask students to label each one rural, suburban, or urban. For one photograph, have them circle two clues that support their answer.

Lesson moves

Ways to Teach It

Give groups photo cards, toy houses, and green paper, then have them build and label urban, suburban, and rural community models.
Ask students to write: Which community would have the most space between homes, and what evidence supports your answer?
Play Community Clue Match by pairing cards showing apartments, farms, yards, crowded streets, and open fields with the correct community type.
Take a short walk near school and tally housing types, open spaces, and building spacing, then classify the local community together.
