The Standard
The United States and New York have political party systems, and the political parties represent specific political, economic, and social philosophies. Debate over the role and influence of political parties continues, although they play a significant role in United States elections and politics. The role of political parties and the platforms they represent varies between states in the United States.

POLITICAL AND CIVIC PARTICIPATION: There are numerous avenues for engagement in the political process, from exercising the power of the vote, to affiliating with political parties, to engaging in other forms of civic participation. Citizens leverage both electoral and non-electoral means to participate in the political process.

What Students Need to Do
- Students analyze party platforms and connect policy positions to political, economic, and social beliefs. They explain how parties shape elections and compare party influence in New York with another state.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use platform language, election rules, and voting data as evidence. They can explain differences among a party platform, a candidate’s position, and government policy.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every candidate follows the party platform or that only two parties exist. They may also think party rules, ballot access, and influence are identical across states.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short platform excerpts and this exit prompt: Identify each philosophy, cite one phrase as evidence, and explain one possible election effect.

Ways to Teach It
Have groups sort issue cards under actual party platform excerpts, then defend two placements with quoted evidence.
Ask students to write: Do political parties help voters make choices, or limit those choices? Use two specific examples.
Run a platform matching game where students pair anonymous policy statements with parties, then check answers against current platform documents.
Compare New York voter registration and election results with another state, then identify one rule or pattern that changes party influence.
