The Standard
The right to vote, a cornerstone of democracy, is the most direct way for citizens to participate in the government. A citizen must register to vote, and may register as a party member or select the status of independent.

What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how voting gives citizens a direct voice in government. They trace the registration process and compare party enrollment with choosing no party affiliation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can complete a mock voter registration form accurately. They can explain how party enrollment affects primary voting without limiting choices in a general election.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think registering with a party requires voting for that party in every election. They may also confuse having no party affiliation with being unregistered or ineligible to vote.
How to Assess It
- Give students a fictional voter profile and a mock registration form. Ask them to complete it and explain how the affiliation choice affects primary and general election voting.
