What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate how rising prices change what a fixed amount of money can buy. They use exchange rates to convert prices and explain how dollar changes affect travelers, consumers, and businesses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare prices across two years and identify the change in purchasing power. Given two exchange rates, the student correctly converts a price and explains who gains or loses when the dollar changes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think inflation means every price rises by the same amount. They often reverse exchange-rate calculations or confuse inflation with exchange-rate changes. Some assume a stronger dollar helps everyone.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A $100 basket rises to $106, while one dollar changes from €0.90 to €0.84. Calculate inflation, convert a €50 item, and name one effect on a U.S. buyer.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs currency cards and grocery price tags, then have them buy the same basket using two years of prices and exchange rates.
Ask students to write: Who benefits and who is hurt when the dollar strengthens, a U.S. tourist, exporter, importer, or foreign visitor?
Run an exchange-rate relay where teams convert five posted prices, check answers, and correct any reversed multiplication or division.
Compare online prices for one phone in the United States and Japan, converting yen to dollars and discussing taxes and shipping.
