What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students compare realistic choices using limits such as money, time, skills, and access. They explain how personal preferences and ethical concerns shape a final decision.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a scenario, students identify feasible options, trade-offs, resource limits, and ethical concerns. They choose an option and support it with relevant evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume the cheapest choice or highest return is always best. They may confuse income with wealth, treat wants as needs, or assume everyone has equal opportunities.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Maya has $600 for a phone. Give her three options, then ask students to choose one and explain how cost, preferences, access, and ethics affected their choice.

Ways to Teach It

Give groups three job-offer cards, play money, and a decision matrix to compare pay, commute, schedule, benefits, and employer practices.
Ask students to write: When should ethical concerns outweigh personal financial gain? Support your answer with one specific example.
Run a choice game where students draw income, expense, preference, and ethics cards before selecting among three purchases.
Have students compare two local phone plans using monthly cost, data limits, contract terms, coverage, and company practices.
