COLD WAR (1945 – 1990): In the period following World War II, the United States entered into an extended era of international conflict called the Cold War which influenced foreign and domestic policy for more than 40 years.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students trace how U.S. policies, Soviet economic weakness, Gorbachev’s reforms, and Eastern European protests interacted. They explain how these forces weakened Soviet control and led to the Berlin Wall’s fall.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can place major developments in sequence and explain links among them. They support a claim about the Cold War’s end with accurate evidence from both the United States and Soviet bloc.
Common Misconceptions: Students may credit one president or the Berlin Wall’s fall alone for ending the Cold War. They may also confuse glasnost with economic reform or assume the Soviet Union collapsed in 1989.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: Name two factors that weakened Soviet control of Eastern Europe, then explain how they worked together using one specific event.

Give groups dated cause cards, yarn, and a wall map; students build a linked timeline from Soviet reforms to the Berlin Wall’s fall.
