INDUSTRIALIZATION AND URBANIZATION (1870 – 1920): The United States was transformed from an agrarian to an increasingly industrial and urbanized society. Although this transformation created new economic opportunities, it also created societal problems that were addressed by a variety of reform efforts.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Track immigration and urban growth, including major push and pull factors. Connect problems facing workers, farmers, immigrants, women, and Black Americans to organized reform efforts. Judge each effort by its goals, methods, results, and limits.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain several clear problem, response, and result chains using dates and evidence. They can compare unions, reformers, movements, laws, and amendments without treating them as interchangeable. They can also explain who benefited and who remained excluded.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all immigrants came for the same reason or faced the same conditions. They often treat Progressives as one united group and assume reforms solved each problem fully. They may also confuse union goals, Populist demands, and constitutional amendments.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Choose one social problem from 1870 to 1920, name one response, and explain one result and one limit.
