THE UNITED STATES IN A CHANGING WORLD (1990 – present): The United States’ political and economic status in the world has faced external and internal challenges related to international conflicts, economic competition, and globalization. Throughout this time period, the nation has continued to debate and define its role in the world.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students weigh how global trade and new technology create jobs, lower prices, shift work, and widen some economic gaps. They explain how multinational corporations shape economies and how trade links the United States and China while also creating rivalry.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use evidence to explain both a benefit and a cost of globalization for workers, consumers, and businesses. They can trace a multinational corporation's influence and explain how trade, technology, and security concerns shape United States relations with China.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume globalization helps or harms everyone in the same way. They may treat multinational corporations as belonging to only one country or view the United States and China as either partners or enemies, rather than both.
How to Assess It
- Give students a chart showing United States trade, jobs, and prices connected to China. Ask them to identify one benefit, one cost, and one source of rivalry, using data from the chart.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups product packages and yarn to build a wall map tracing where one phone, shirt, or snack is designed, made, and sold.
Ask students to write: Who gains and who loses when a United States company moves production abroad?
Run a tariff card game where teams represent United States firms, Chinese firms, workers, and consumers, then track winners and losers.
Compare a current multinational company's jobs, prices, taxes, and labor practices in the United States and one host country.
