What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why the Bush administration responded to Iraq’s seizure of Kuwait and how it built international support. They weigh the war’s results and compare U.S. responses in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Kosovo, including concerns about casualties and another Vietnam.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place the four conflicts in order and accurately describe the U.S. response to each. They can use evidence to explain why leaders intervened in some cases, avoided intervention in others, and faced mixed results.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse the 1991 Gulf War with the 2003 Iraq War or think Saddam Hussein was removed in 1991. They may also assume the United States used the same policy in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Kosovo, overlooking major differences in timing, goals, and military action.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In four sentences, name one reason for intervention in Kuwait, one war consequence, and one reason U.S. responses differed in Rwanda and Kosovo.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give groups event cards from Kuwait, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Kosovo to arrange on a timeline and label with the U.S. response.
Ask students to write: When should preventing human rights abuses outweigh the risks of military intervention?
Play a case-matching game in which students pair policy decisions with each conflict and earn points by citing accurate evidence.
Give students a current humanitarian crisis news brief and have them apply 1990s intervention criteria to recommend a U.S. response.
