GLOBALIZATION AND A CHANGING GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT (1990–PRESENT): Technological changes have resulted in a more interconnected world, affecting economic and political relations and in some cases leading to conflict and in others to efforts to cooperate. Globalization and population pressures have led to strains on the environment.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students compare arguments for and against globalization using evidence from trade, labor, migration, culture, and access to resources. They explain how policies and institutions affect different groups.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can identify who benefits and who bears costs in a specific case. They support a claim with evidence, address a counterclaim, and distinguish among major global economic institutions.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume global trade benefits everyone equally or that globalization affects only economics. They may confuse the roles of the WTO, World Bank, and IMF, or treat cultural exchange as one-way.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name one benefit and one cost of a global smartphone supply chain, identify affected groups, and make an evidence-based judgment about it.

Ways to Teach It

Using yarn and a world map, students trace a smartphone supply chain, then label where jobs, profits, and environmental costs appear.
Hold a town hall where workers, consumers, business owners, and environmental advocates argue whether a multinational factory should open locally.
Give teams claim cards to sort by stakeholder and label each as supporting, criticizing, or complicating globalization.
Students inspect five classroom product labels, locate their origins, and explain how one purchase links local consumers to global labor.
