DECOLONIZATION AND NATIONALISM (1900–2000): Nationalist and decolonization movements employed a variety of methods, including nonviolent resistance and armed struggle. Tensions and conflicts often continued after independence as new challenges arose.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how the Qing collapse, warlord rule, foreign invasion, and conflict between Nationalists and Communists led to two rival governments. They compare Mao Zedong’s collective policies with Deng Xiaoping’s market reforms and judge their political, economic, and social effects.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can build an accurate timeline from 1911 to 1949 and explain how warlords and both world wars changed the conflict. The student can cite specific Mao and Deng policies, compare their goals, and describe effects on Chinese people.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat nationalism as belonging only to the Nationalists, though both sides claimed to defend China. They may miss how the Japanese invasion interrupted the civil war and changed public support. They may also equate Deng’s market reforms with multiparty democracy or treat the 1949 division as fully settled.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Place the Qing collapse, May Fourth Movement, Japanese invasion, and Communist victory in order. Then explain one cause of Communist victory and one difference between Mao and Deng.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs eight dated event cards from 1911 to 1949; students sequence them and connect each with cause-and-effect arrows.
Ask students to write: Which mattered more in the Communist victory, land policy, Nationalist weakness, or Japanese invasion? Cite two documents.
Play policy sort: teams place Mao and Deng policy cards under political, economic, or social headings, then correct another team’s choices.
Project a current Taiwan Strait news map; students annotate three links between the 1949 division and the issue reported.
