What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how Zionism and Arab nationalism developed during Ottoman decline and European rule. They explain how religious identity and secular political goals shaped each movement. They connect British policies, migration, competing land claims, and Israel’s creation to later conflict.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can distinguish Zionism, Arab nationalism, and the mandate system without treating any movement as uniform. They can use maps and primary sources to explain competing claims and causes of conflict through 1948 and its aftermath.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Zionism and Arab nationalism as purely religious, though both included secular goals and internal differences. They may confuse the British Mandate with an independent state or assume the conflict began only in 1948.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In four sentences, explain how one religious or secular idea influenced Zionism or Arab nationalism, then connect it to one event before or during 1948.
