DECOLONIZATION AND NATIONALISM (1900–2000): Nationalist and decolonization movements employed a variety of methods, including nonviolent resistance and armed struggle. Tensions and conflicts often continued after independence as new challenges arose.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how British and French colonial rule shaped nationalism in India and Indochina. They compare Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance with Ho Chi Minh’s mix of nationalism, communism, and armed struggle. They also explain how the Muslim League influenced partition.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use specific evidence to compare each leader’s goals, beliefs, and methods. They can connect mass protest, armed conflict, and religious divisions to independence and partition.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume Gandhi alone won Indian independence or that partition created a unified state. They may also treat Ho Chi Minh only as a communist, overlooking his nationalist goals and opposition to French rule.
How to Assess It
- Give students a two-column exit ticket: compare Gandhi and Ho Chi Minh using one similarity, one difference, and one supporting fact for each leader.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups source cards on boycotts, salt marches, guerrilla warfare, and partition, then sort them by leader, method, and goal.
Ask students to write: Which mattered more in decolonization, a leader’s ideology or chosen method? Support the claim with two examples.
Run a matching relay using cards for Gandhi, Ho Chi Minh, the Muslim League, nonviolence, armed struggle, nationalism, communism, and partition.
Have students annotate a modern map of South Asia and Southeast Asia, then connect current borders to colonial rule and independence conflicts.
