UNRESOLVED GLOBAL CONFLICT (1945–1991: THE COLD WAR): The second half of the 20th century was shaped by the Cold War, a legacy of World War II. The United States and the Soviet Union emerged as global superpowers engaged in ideological, political, economic, and military competition.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how communism expanded and was contained in Cuba, Vietnam, and Afghanistan from local, American, and Soviet perspectives. They explain alliances, nuclear weapons, the military-industrial complex, nonalignment, and détente.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use specific evidence to explain each side’s goals, actions, and fears. They connect regional conflicts to wider Cold War competition while recognizing the choices of local leaders and nonaligned countries.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may describe every conflict as a direct war between the United States and Soviet Union. They may confuse nonalignment with neutrality or isolation. They may think détente ended the rivalry or eliminated nuclear weapons.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose Cuba, Vietnam, or Afghanistan. In four sentences, identify who expanded communism, who tried to contain it, one local perspective, and one result.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Place alliance, nuclear weapon, and conflict cards on a world map, then connect related cards with colored yarn.
Write a cabinet memo advising India or Egypt whether to join an alliance, using two specific risks and two possible benefits.
Teams race to arrange event cards chronologically, then explain whether each event increased confrontation or encouraged peaceful coexistence.
Give students two recent headlines about strategic neutrality, then compare those choices with Cold War nonalignment in a three-column chart.
