What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students sort political, economic, and military developments into long-term causes, short-term triggers, immediate effects, and lasting effects for each war. They compare the wars and explain links between events using evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can build accurate causal chains for both wars and identify meaningful similarities and differences. They use evidence such as alliance systems, the Treaty of Versailles, territorial expansion, and postwar institutions.
Common Misconceptions: Students often treat the assassination at Sarajevo or Germany's invasion of Poland as the only cause of each war. They may confuse triggers with long-term causes or assume every effect occurred immediately after fighting ended.
How to Assess It: On an exit ticket, name one long-term cause, one immediate trigger, and one effect for each war. Then identify one similarity and one difference.

Ways to Teach It

Give groups cause-and-effect cards for both wars, then have them build two timelines and connect shared factors with string.
Write a CER response: Which factor best explains the outbreak of each war, and what evidence supports your choice?
Play a sorting relay where teams place event cards under long-term cause, short-term trigger, immediate effect, or lasting effect.
Compare a 1914 map, a 1939 map, and a current map to trace how wartime border changes still shape disputes.
