: ENLIGHTENMENT, REVOLUTION, AND NATIONALISM: The Enlightenment called into question traditional beliefs and inspired widespread political, economic, and social change. This intellectual movement was used to challenge political authorities in Europe and colonial rule in the Americas. These ideals inspired political and social movements.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace how language, religion, and shared history shaped nationalist movements. They explain how leaders unified Italy and Germany, then compare those movements with nationalist pressures in Ottoman and Habsburg lands.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use maps, events, and primary sources to explain how nationalism could unite one group and divide an empire. They support comparisons with accurate examples from at least two regions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume everyone supported unification or that Italy and Germany formed peacefully. They may also confuse the Austrian Empire with Austria-Hungary or treat Ottoman decline as one sudden event.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In four sentences, explain how nationalism unified either Italy or Germany but weakened either the Ottoman or Habsburg state. Include one specific example for each case.
