Following World War II, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) was written. This provides a set of principles to guide efforts to protect threatened groups.

HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS: Since the Holocaust, human rights violations have generated worldwide attention and concern. The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights has provided a set of principles to guide efforts to protect threatenedgroups and has served as a lens through which historical occurrences of oppression can be evaluated.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect the Holocaust and the Nuremberg and Tokyo Trials to the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They interpret selected articles and use them to evaluate the treatment of people by governments.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain, with evidence, how wartime atrocities and postwar trials shaped specific rights in the declaration. They can apply an article to a historical case and defend whether that right was violated.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the declaration as a binding world law or assume the United Nations can enforce every article. They may confuse it with the Nuremberg judgments or believe it was written before the Holocaust.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Read Article 5 beside a brief excerpt from Nuremberg trial testimony about Nazi medical experiments. Identify the protected right and explain why nations included it in 1948.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed article cards and evidence cards from Holocaust, Nuremberg, and Tokyo sources, then have them match and justify each pair.
Write a paragraph answering: Which postwar event most shaped the declaration, and what evidence supports your claim?
Run a rights sorting relay where teams place short scenarios under the matching article, then challenge one placement with evidence.
Compare a recent refugee news report with Articles 3, 5, 13, and 14, then write a rights based policy recommendation.
