What Students Need to Do: Students sort familiar examples as needs or wants. They identify tools, technologies, and resources people use to get or make those things, then explain how each one helps.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given pictures, a student can match a tool, technology, or resource to a need or want and explain the connection. The student can give examples, such as using a stove to prepare food or money to buy a toy.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every desired item a need because they want it strongly. They may think technology means only screens, or overlook money, materials, workers, and natural resources.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a winter coat and a sewing machine. Ask, “What need does the coat meet, and how can the sewing machine help?”

Lesson moves

Give groups craft sticks, paper, tape, and fabric to build a model shelter, then name how the materials and tools helped meet a need.
Have students draw and label one tool or technology their family uses, then write, “It helps us ___.”
Play a matching game where students pair a need or want card with a tool, technology, or resource card and explain the match.
Study a grocery store photo and identify how carts, shelves, refrigerators, workers, and money help people get food.
