What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why a family cannot choose everything it wants at one time. They identify what was chosen, what was given up, and any money or time spent.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can make a choice within a simple limit, such as a five-dollar budget. The student can name the cost and the option not chosen.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse wants with needs or think families can always buy both choices. They may think cost means only money, not time or something given up.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “A family has $5 and can buy bus tickets or ice cream. Circle one choice and draw what the family gives up.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs five counters and priced picture cards, then have them choose purchases and place rejected cards under a “gave up” label.
Ask students to draw one choice their family might make when there is not enough money, time, or space for both options.
Play Choice Corners by naming two options and one limit, then have students move to a choice and name its cost.
Use a grocery flyer and a ten-dollar budget to choose food for a family snack, then list items that could not be bought.
