What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a family member or trusted adult questions, record key events, and place those events in time order. They identify the main person in a biography or legend and describe that person’s qualities using details from the story.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can create a clear timeline with events arranged from earliest to latest. The student can name a person’s quality, such as courage or kindness, and point to an action that shows it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place events by importance instead of by date. They may think family history begins with their own birth. They may name a quality based on appearance or confuse a legend with a fully factual account.
How to Assess It
- Give students three dated family event cards to order. Read a short biography aloud, then ask them to name one quality and the action that shows it.

Ways to Teach It
Have students write interview events on cards, then arrange them along a paper timeline from earliest to latest.
Read a picture-book biography and ask, "What quality describes this person, and which action proves it?"
Play First, Next, Last by having pairs sort sets of family event cards and explain their choices.
