Families have a past and change over time. There are different types of documents that relate family histories. (NOTE: Teachers will use their professional judgment and demonstrate sensitivity regarding the varied family structures of their students and availability of information.)

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students put family or household events in time order. They explain when events happened using words such as before, after, first, next, yesterday, last year, and summer.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can arrange several event pictures from earliest to latest. They can describe the order and connect events to days, weeks, months, years, or seasons.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse first with most recent or think every past event happened yesterday. They may also mix up the lengths of a day, week, month, and year.
How to Assess It: Give students four pictures from a fictional family history. Ask them to order the pictures and describe two events using sequence and time words.

Ways to Teach It

Students arrange four illustrated event cards on a floor timeline, then label each with first, next, then, or last.
Read a fictional family story, then ask, “Which event happened first, and how do you know?”
Play Timeline Relay: teams match event cards to day, week, month, year, or season clue cards.
Send home an optional calendar page where students mark one household event and tell when it happened without sharing private details.
