Families have a past and change over time. There are different types of documents that relate family histories. (NOTE: Teachers will use their professional judgment and demonstrate sensitivity regarding the varied family structures of their students and availability of information.)

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use photographs, objects, and short family stories to compare daily life across time. They name what stayed similar, what changed, and what families may pass from one generation to the next.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a past family scene and a present-day scene, students identify at least one similarity and one difference. They point to a detail that supports each answer and name one tradition, story, or trait that may continue across generations.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all families long ago had the same homes, jobs, and traditions. They may label every unfamiliar object as old and every familiar object as new. They may think only physical traits pass through generations, overlooking recipes, languages, stories, and customs.
How to Assess It
- Show one historical family photograph and one present-day photograph. Ask students to complete: “Both families ____. One difference is ____. Something families may pass down is ____.”

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort reproduction photographs and object cards into long ago, today, or both, then explain one card placement.
Post a prompt asking which family activity might stay the same across generations and which part might change, then use labeled drawings for partner talk.
Play a memory matching game with past and present family activity cards; after each match, students state one similarity or difference.
Compare a local historical photograph with a current neighborhood photograph, focusing on homes, clothing, work, or celebrations.
