Families have a past and change over time. There are different types of documents that relate family histories. (NOTE: Teachers will use their professional judgment and demonstrate sensitivity regarding the varied family structures of their students and availability of information.)

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify ways a family can change, such as members joining, moving, or growing older. They use photos, letters, calendars, and other records to place changes in time.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students put family events in a sensible order and describe what changed. They point to details in a record as evidence for their answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every family changes in the same way or follows the same pattern. They may confuse an event with the record that documents it.
How to Assess It
- Give students three illustrated records from a fictional family. Ask them to order the records, name one change, and circle the evidence they used.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Pairs sort copies of photos, calendar pages, and announcements from a fictional family into a timeline, then add captions.
Ask, “What might a family record tell someone years later?” Students draw one example and explain their thinking.
Play Record Match by pairing family event cards with the photo, note, certificate, or calendar entry that could document each event.
Invite a willing staff member to show two nonprivate family records and describe what changed between them.
