Families have a past and change over time. There are different types of documents that relate family histories. (NOTE: Teachers will use their professional judgment and demonstrate sensitivity regarding the varied family structures of their students and availability of information.)

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students place personal, school, or family events in time order on a simple timeline. They use memories, drawings, photos, or stories to describe what happened first, next, and last.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student independently orders at least three events and gives each one a clear label. The student explains how one event came before or after another.
Common Misconceptions: Students may order events by importance instead of time, or confuse their age with a calendar date. They may think every family has the same structure or keeps the same records.
How to Assess It: On an exit ticket, have students draw three events from their school year in time order and label them first, next, and last. Ask them to circle the earliest event.

Ways to Teach It

Give students yarn, clothespins, and three drawings of life events, then have them clip the events in time order.
Students discuss how they or a familiar place changed, then draw the change and write one sentence about it.
Play Timeline Mix-Up: partners reorder four cards showing familiar school events and explain their choices using before and after.
Students ask a trusted adult about one past event, then add it to a timeline or use a provided classroom story.
