What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name resources from nature, such as water, soil, plants, trees, and animals. They connect each resource to food, water, clothing, or shelter.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can sort pictures into natural resources and human-made items. They can explain how one natural resource helps meet a basic need.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think food comes only from stores or water comes from faucets. They may confuse human-made products, such as paper, with the natural resources used to make them.
How to Assess It
- Give students pictures of a tree, cow, water, and rocks. Ask them to choose one and draw how people use it to meet a basic need.

Sort classroom objects and picture cards into items from nature and items made by people, then identify the original natural resource.
Complete and discuss the prompt: People use ___ from nature to get food, water, clothing, or shelter.
