What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students read simple maps and use a map key to identify schools, hospitals, museums, capitals, monuments, and cultural centers. They describe routes using words such as left, right, near, past, and next to.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a community map, a student can point to a named place and explain what its symbol means. The student can trace a route from school and give directions in the correct order.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat map symbols as pictures showing the real size or appearance of places. They may confuse left and right, skip landmarks, or give directions from the destination instead of the starting point.
How to Assess It: Give students a simple map and say, “Circle the museum. Draw a route from the school to the museum, then tell two directions.”

Ways to Teach It

Build a community map with blocks and paper symbols, then use yarn to mark a route from the school to a hospital.
Ask, “Which place on our map helps the community most?” Students name the place, locate it, and explain their choice.
Play Route Relay by giving pairs destination cards and having them trace and describe the correct path on a classroom map.
Show a local town or transit map, then have students find the school and choose a route to a library or cultural center.
