What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students identify ways their lives connect with people in other places through food, clothing, stories, and traditions. They describe simple actions that show care for people and the environment.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name a connection to people outside the local community. The student can explain how an action, such as reducing waste or treating traditions respectfully, helps others.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think people in other countries are completely different from them. They may also believe only adults can help or that caring for Earth means only picking up litter.
How to Assess It: Give students an exit ticket with the prompt, “Draw one way you can care for our world or its people. Explain how it helps.”

Ways to Teach It

Sort picture cards showing actions, such as recycling, wasting water, sharing, and teasing, into “shows care” and “does not show care.”
Read a picture book about children in another country, then ask, “What do we share, and what can we respect?”
Play Action Charades using cards labeled reuse, save water, welcome others, protect animals, and learn another greeting.
Examine one day of classroom trash, then choose one item the class can reuse or avoid tomorrow.
