What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify choices that make a classroom or community safe, fair, and caring. They explain why a choice is responsible and act it out.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can sort responsible and irresponsible actions and give a simple reason for each choice. They can tell the truth, follow rules, help, share, listen, and ask for information.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think citizens are only adults or people who work in government. They may think responsibility means only obeying rules, or that sharing means giving away everything they have.
How to Assess It
- Read: “Two students need the same box of crayons.” Ask students to draw a responsible solution and finish: “This is responsible because...”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Set up role-play stations with dropped pencils, limited crayons, a found toy, and line-cutting, then have students act out responsible choices.
Ask, “What makes someone a good classroom citizen?” Students draw one action and explain how it helps the group.
Play a card sort using picture cards of helping, lying, listening, sharing, rule-breaking, and checking facts before speaking.
Choose one classroom resource, such as books or art supplies, and make a class plan for sharing and caring for it.
