What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students join a shared task, take a role, listen to others, and help finish the work. They make choices that help the class or group.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student completes a group role, shares materials, listens, and offers useful help without taking over. The student can explain how one action helped the group.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think helping means being the boss or doing everything themselves. They may confuse participation with sitting nearby, talking the most, or waiting for others to work.
How to Assess It
- Give each group ten paper cups and five minutes to build a tower. Ask each student to draw or write one way they helped the group.

Ways to Teach It
Give teams craft materials and assigned roles to make one classroom welcome poster together.
Ask, "What can you do when your group is stuck?" Record one helpful action in words or pictures.
Play Helpful Choice Charades, where students act out sharing, listening, inviting someone, or cleaning up for classmates to identify.
Walk through the school, notice adults and students helping the community, then add their actions to a class chart.
