What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing selected patriotic songs. They explain, in simple words, what key phrases say about the country and its values.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student recites the pledge in order and joins in singing a familiar patriotic song. The student explains ideas such as freedom, fairness, unity, and love of country using an example.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat words such as liberty or justice without knowing what they mean. They may think a pledge is a song, or that every patriotic song describes real events.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to choose one phrase from the pledge or a song and draw what it means. Have them explain their drawing in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs phrase cards and picture cards showing freedom, fairness, unity, and country, then have them match and explain each pair.
Ask, “What promise does the pledge make, and what words help you know?” Record student answers on a class chart.
Play lyric freeze: pause a patriotic song, then have students supply the next word and explain one familiar phrase.
Examine photos of the pledge or patriotic songs at school events, then discuss why people use them during gatherings.
