What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students listen to stories about notable people, past events, and folklore. They identify key details and explain why a person or event is remembered. They connect national holidays to their dates, people, events, or ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name a person or event from a story, give one accurate detail, and explain its significance. They can match familiar holidays to when and why they are observed. They recognize that families may observe holidays differently.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat folklore as proven fact or assume one famous person caused change alone. They may think holidays are only days off, confuse their purposes, or assume everyone celebrates them the same way.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit prompt: “Choose Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Independence Day, or Labor Day. When is it observed, and why?”

Ways to Teach It

Give pairs picture cards of people, events, folklore, and holidays to sort, match, and explain.
After a read-aloud, ask, “Why do people still tell this story or remember this person?”
Play a calendar match game using holiday names, dates or seasons, and reason cards.
Study the school calendar, choose one national holiday, and ask a family member how they observe or discuss it.
