Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students compare how people in New York may use different languages, foods, clothing, celebrations, and family traditions. They name similarities and differences respectfully, using evidence from stories, pictures, or family profiles.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can describe one similarity and one difference between two cultural groups in New York. The student avoids saying that every person in a group acts the same way.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think everyone in one cultural group shares identical traditions. They may label unfamiliar customs as strange or confuse cultural traditions with personal preferences.
How to Assess It: Give students two illustrated family profiles. Ask them to draw or write one similarity and one difference, then circle the detail that supports each answer.

Lesson moves

Students place picture cards from two teacher-vetted New York family profiles onto a Venn diagram labeled same and different.
Read two short family stories, then ask, "What tradition is shared, and what tradition is different?"
Play Culture Clue Match by pairing food, language, music, or celebration cards with details from classroom texts.
Study a New York community calendar and mark celebrations from several cultures, then discuss which activities families may share.
