What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do: Students name a tradition practiced by their family or a family they know. They explain what happens and why it matters to that family.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can describe a tradition with clear details about people, actions, food, clothing, music, or stories. The student recognizes that families may celebrate and practice traditions differently.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every family follows the same holidays or customs. They may also confuse a daily routine, such as brushing teeth, with a tradition that carries family meaning.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw one family tradition and complete: “My family or a family I know _____ because _____.”

Ways to Teach It

Create a class paper quilt with one square showing a tradition from each student’s family or a family they know.
Discuss: “How can two families celebrate the same event in different ways?” Record examples on a chart.
Play Tradition Detective by reading family scenario cards and having students identify the tradition and clues showing why it matters.
Students interview a trusted adult about a childhood tradition, then draw or write one detail they learned.
