What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to or read stories about different families. They identify similarities and differences in family members, homes, routines, and traditions. They recognize that families can be described in many ways.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare two families from stories and name one similarity and one difference. The student speaks respectfully and does not treat one family structure as the normal one.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every family has a mother, father, and children living together. They may also think relatives must look alike or that one family structure is better than another.
How to Assess It
- Show two illustrated families from familiar stories. Ask: Name one way these families are alike and one way they are different.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two fictional family cards and trait cards, then sort each trait as family one, family two, or both.
Read The Family Book, then ask students to draw and label one similarity between two families in the book.
Play Same, Different, or Both by reading family traits while students hold up one of three labeled cards.
Send home an optional interview sheet asking a trusted adult about one family routine, then add responses to a class chart.
