What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether to use earned money now or keep it for later. They explain how a goal, need, or want affects their choice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a small amount of money and two choices, a student can choose an amount to use and an amount to keep. The student gives a clear reason tied to a goal.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students think money must be used as soon as it is earned, or that saving means never using it. Others confuse saving money with getting change after a purchase.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Mia earns $5. She can spend $2 and save $3, or spend all $5. Circle one plan and explain why.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs five play dollars, picture-price cards, and two envelopes labeled “Now” and “Later”; students divide the money and explain their choice.
Ask, “You earned $6. What would you buy now, and what would you keep for later?” Students draw and label their plan.
Play Spend or Save: students draw a goal card, choose from two money plans, and earn a point for a clear reason.
Use a class store menu and $10 earned by washing a car; students plan one purchase and set aside money for a larger goal.
