What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect doing a job with receiving pay. They explain how money pays for objects and help, then sort purchases as needs or wants.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can trace a simple path from a job to earnings to a purchase. The student can identify a good, identify a service, and explain whether each is needed or wanted.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think money comes from a bank or card without connecting it to work. They may overlook services such as haircuts or bus rides because no object is purchased. They may also treat every want as a need.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Maya earns $5 walking a dog, then buys bread and a bus ride. Label the job, good, and service.”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Set up a classroom shop with play money, job cards, object cards, and service cards; students earn wages, then choose one purchase.
Read a family budget scenario, then ask students to name the job and explain whether each purchase is a need or want.
Play Job, Good, or Service: show a picture card, and students move to the labeled corner that matches it.
Study a grocery receipt and a bus ticket, then discuss what work might help a family pay for each.
