The Standard

A producer makes goods or provides a service, while a consumer uses or benefits from the goods or services.

What Students Need to Do: Students tell whether a person is making a good, providing a service, or using one. They identify producers and consumers in familiar situations.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student correctly labels a baker as a producer and a customer as a consumer. The student explains the label using what each person makes, provides, buys, or uses.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think producers only make objects and forget that people can provide services. They may also assume a person is always a producer or always a consumer, rather than changing roles.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a barber cutting a customer's hair. Ask, “Who is the producer, who is the consumer, and how do you know?”

Lesson moves

Set up a classroom bakery where students make paper bread, sell it with play money, and switch producer and consumer roles.
Ask students to write or draw one time they were a consumer and name the good or service they used.
Play Producer or Consumer by reading short scenarios while students hold up a P or C card for each person.
Study a school lunch and identify who produces the meal, who consumes it, and which goods and services are involved.
