What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students classify objects into given categories, count each category, and sort the categories by count. Each category contains no more than ten objects.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student sorts buttons into given color categories, counts each group accurately, and orders the category cards from fewest to most. The student explains the ordering with the counts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may invent a different sorting rule, place one object in multiple categories, or skip objects while counting. They may order categories by object size or spread instead of count.
How to Assess It
- Give the student a mixed set of objects and three named categories containing at most ten objects each. Ask the student to classify, count, and order the categories by count.
