What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the constant of proportionality, or unit rate, in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions. They connect the same constant across representations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student finds 4 dollars per notebook from a table or the point (1, 4). The student identifies 4 as the coefficient in y = 4x and explains its units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use any ratio from a table without reducing to a unit rate. They may mistake an initial value or coordinate for the constant of proportionality.
How to Assess It
- Show a table with 2 notebooks costing $8 and 5 costing $20. Ask students to find the constant of proportionality and write its units.
