What Students Need to Do

Students decide whether two quantities have a proportional relationship. They test for equivalent ratios in a table or check whether a graph is a straight line through the origin.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student identifies a table with a constant y-to-x ratio as proportional and explains the constant relationship. The student rejects a straight-line graph that does not pass through the origin.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call any increasing relationship proportional or accept any straight line. They may compare additive differences instead of multiplicative ratios.

How to Assess It

Give the pairs (1, 4), (2, 8), and (5, 20), then add (6, 25). Ask whether all pairs form a proportional relationship and why.
