NY Next Generation Math NY-7.NS.1.d

Math7th GradeApply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers. Represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students apply commutative, associative, identity, inverse, and distributive properties as strategies for adding and subtracting rational numbers. They rewrite expressions into useful equivalent forms while preserving value.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student rewrites (-3.5 + 8) + 3.5 as (-3.5 + 3.5) + 8 and finds 8. The student names or explains the regrouping and verifies the value.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reorder terms across subtraction without first rewriting it as addition of an inverse. They may change a sign, denominator, or value while regrouping.

How to Assess It

Ask students to simplify -2.75 + 6 + 2.75 and 3/4 - 5/6 + 1/4 efficiently. Require them to identify and justify each useful rewrite.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Arrange signed rational-number cards, rewrite subtraction as addition, and regroup opposites or convenient sums before calculating.

  2. Ask students which property permits a chosen reorder or regrouping and why the value stays unchanged.

  3. Play efficient-strategy match with rational expressions, equivalent rewrites, property explanations, and final sums.

  4. Combine credits and debits or temperature changes by grouping quantities that cancel or form convenient values.
