- Students use operation properties to make addition and subtraction easier. They change the order or grouping of addends and use known facts without changing the total.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student solves 2 + 7 + 8 by joining 2 and 8 to make 10, then adding 7. The student explains why the regrouping keeps the same sum without needing formal property names.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may change a number while rearranging addends or assume subtraction can be reordered like addition. They may name a property without showing how it helps the calculation.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to solve 6 + 4 + 3 in an efficient way and explain why their rearrangement keeps the sum unchanged.
