What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify real-world and mathematical situations in which equal positive and negative quantities cancel. They describe the combined change as zero.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student recognizes that a $12 deposit and a $12 withdrawal have a net change of $0. The student models the opposite quantities with signed numbers or movements on a number line.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think any positive and negative pair makes zero or confuse an opposite with a reciprocal. They may also ignore the units or direction represented by each sign.

How to Assess It

An elevator moves up 5 floors and then down 5 floors. Ask students to write the signed changes and explain why the total change is zero.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Pair red and black counters of equal value, remove each zero pair, and record the remaining sum.

  2. Ask students which negative quantity would cancel +7 and how they know the total is zero.

  3. Play opposite match by pairing signed-number cards that sum to zero and explaining a context for each pair.

  4. Track equal deposits and withdrawals in a bank register and identify every transaction pair with zero net change.
