What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students interpret an inequality by locating both rational numbers on an oriented number line. They connect the greater number with the point farther right or higher.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student explains -3 > -7 because -3 lies to the right of -7. The student places fractions or decimals accurately before writing the comparison.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare only absolute values and claim -7 is greater than -3. They may reverse the inequality symbol after correctly placing the points.
How to Assess It
- Give -1.5 and -2/3. Ask students to plot both, write a true inequality, and explain it using relative position.
