What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent right rectangular prisms, right rectangular pyramids, and right triangular prisms with nets of rectangles and triangles. Using supplied measurements, they find each face area and total surface area in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student labels all faces on a right triangular prism net, calculates each rectangle and triangle area, and adds them once. The student verifies that the net folds into the intended solid.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may omit a face, count one face twice, or pair dimensions that do not belong to the same face. They may confuse the net's total area with the solid's volume.
How to Assess It
- Give students a net for a right rectangular prism with all needed dimensions. Ask them to label corresponding faces, find each face area, and calculate the surface area.
