NY Next Generation Math NY-6.EE.9

Math6th GradeRepresent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.

The Standard

Use variables to represent two quantities in a real-world problem that change in relationship to one another. Given a verbal context and an equation, identify the dependent variable, in terms of the other quantity, thought of as the independent variable. Analyze the relationship between the dependent and independent variables using graphs and tables, and relate these to the equation.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students represent two quantities that change together in a real-world problem. From a context and equation, they identify the independent and dependent variables and connect the relationship across tables and graphs.

What Mastery Looks Like

For d = 4t, a student explains that time t is independent and distance d depends on it. The student creates consistent table pairs and plots them to show the relationship.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse which quantity depends on the other or place variables on the wrong graph axes. They may generate table values that do not satisfy the equation.

How to Assess It

Give the context and equation c = 3n for the cost of n notebooks. Ask students to identify both variables, complete a table, and plot and explain the relationship.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use input cards and an equation rule to generate paired values, organize a table, and plot the ordered pairs.

  2. Ask students which quantity they choose first and which quantity changes because of that choice.

  3. Play representation match with contexts, equations, variable roles, tables, and graphs for the same relationship.

  4. Model distance over time, total cost by quantity, or water level by elapsed minutes.
