NY Next Generation Math NY-6.EE.5

Math6th GradeReason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.

The Standard

Understand solving an equation or inequality as a process of answering a question: which values from a specified set, if any, make the equation or inequality true? Use substitution to determine whether a given number in a specified set makes an equation or inequality true.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students test values from a specified set to find which ones make an equation or inequality true. They substitute each candidate and compare the two sides or check the inequality.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given the set {2, 4, 6}, the student identifies 4 as making 3x + 1 = 13 true. The student clearly shows the substitution and truth check.

Common Misconceptions

Students may test values outside the specified set or stop after finding one value for an inequality. They may substitute into only one occurrence of the variable.

How to Assess It

From the set {1, 3, 5, 7}, ask which values make 2x + 1 less than 10 true and require substitution evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place candidate-number cards into equation mats and compare both sides after each substitution.

  2. Ask students to explain why an inequality can have several true values in the same specified set.

  3. Play true-value hunt, where pairs test every value in a supplied set against one equation or inequality.

  4. Test which ticket quantities from a short list keep a purchase within a fixed budget.
