What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students replace unlike fractions with equivalent fractions that share a denominator. They add or subtract the numerators, then simplify and interpret answers that include mixed numbers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student rewrites 2/3 + 3/4 as 8/12 + 9/12 and finds 1 5/12. The student explains why changing the denominator also requires changing the numerator.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add or subtract denominators directly. They may scale only the denominator, mishandle regrouping in mixed numbers, or stop before simplifying an improper result.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to solve 2 1/3 minus 3/4, show the equivalent fractions used, and explain why the answer is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It
Combine unlike fraction strips over a common whole, then record the equivalent fractions and resulting sum.
Ask students to explain why 1/2 + 1/3 cannot equal 2/5 using a visual model.
Play common-denominator race where partners draw two fraction cards and earn a point for a correct equivalent pair and solution.
Adjust a recipe by adding two fractional ingredient amounts with different denominators.
